Introduction

Windows Command Prompt (CMD) is often ignored because people jump straight to PowerShell or GUIs.
But CMD is still widely used, lightweight, and important for:

  • Legacy systems

  • Quick troubleshooting

  • Understanding Windows internals

If you know CMD, PowerShell becomes much easier later.


1. Opening Command Prompt

  • Press Win + R → type cmd → Enter

  • Or search Command Prompt

Run as Administrator when needed.


2. Navigation Commands (Basics)

cd – Change Directory

cd foldername
cd ..
cd \
cd C:\Users

dir – List Files & Folders

dir
dir /a     # show hidden files
dir /w     # wide view

cls – Clear Screen

cls

3. File & Folder Management

mkdir / md – Create Folder

mkdir project

rmdir / rd – Remove Folder

rmdir foldername
rmdir /s foldername

type – View File Content

type file.txt

copy – Copy Files

copy file.txt backup.txt

move – Move or Rename

move old.txt new.txt

del – Delete Files ⚠️

4. Searching & Filtering

find

find "error" logfile.txt

5. System Information
